Fuel Shortages in the Near Future

Norwich Union Risk Services warns businesses to prepare for fuel shortage!

With the increase in fuel prices, Norwich Union Risk Services (NURS) is warning businesses to check that they have an adequate business continuity plan in place.

Alan Trueman, NURS’ business continuity specialist, said: “It’s highly unlikely that we’ll see the kind of fuel demonstrations that took place in Autumn 2000, however, concern over rising fuel prices should act as a reminder to companies that interruptions to fuel supplies can have a devastating impact on businesses.

The last thing anyone would want at the moment is unjustifiable panic and a rush to the pumps, as this would create problems. But it might be a good idea for firms to carry out a brief check, just to make sure that their plans would stand up to a fuel shortage.

Measures to cope during a fuel shortage often focus on staff,” said Alan. For example, employers need to examine which staff members are able to operate from home, and which make journeys that are ‘essential’ to operations.

Deliveries, and the activities of suppliers also need to be considered. Understanding the entire travel profile of your organisation should be a key part of any business continuity plan.” Alan also warned that some firms, which are entirely dependent upon road transport may also be considering localised storage of fuel.

Such an approach needs to be carefully weighed-up against the potential additional safety, fire and pollution risks. Appropriate risk assessments would need to be carried out while ensuring any relevant regulations are fully complied with.”
