Deeside, Flintshire – Where growth will happen!
DEESIDE could be heading for an economic revival.
Despite the gloom and job losses triggered in the aftermath of the credit crunch, the area’s MP believes the green shoots of recovery are breaking through.
On the High Street hundreds of new jobs are in the pipeline, with news that outdoor superstore Go Outdoors is taking over the empty former B&Q store at Queensferry creating 40 new jobs.
Pub chain Wetherspoons is creating 35 jobs with a £1m redevelopment of the Central Hotel in Shotton, while hundreds of new jobs will be created on the Ffordd Llanarth redevelopment in Connah’s Quay, which includes a 52,000 sq ft Morrisons food store.
Woolworths’s empty store in Shotton, has also been taken over by discount retailer, Diskos.
Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami believes the High Street developments are a sign of a “major revival” for the area.
He said: “Right now we are experiencing unprecedented economic challenges, but our route to revival is taking shape.
“Between the Northern Gateway project and the flurry of new companies coming to the area I can see a very bright future for Deeside.
“We are looking at the real prospect of several hundred new jobs coming to Deeside in the coming months and years.
“The jobs that will come with the Northern Gateway project will complement the service sector jobs that are being created in Shotton and Connah’s Quay.
“We have fought hard over the years to capitalise on Flintshire’s economic strengths and we have never been complacent. We are now witnessing the results of dedication and hard work, of investing in people during tough times.
Last week formal approval was given by Flintshire County Council planners for the Northern Gateway Project. This will see a huge area of land next to Deeside Industrial Park become the main centre for development on Deeside over the next 10-15 years.
The old RAF Sealand east camp and former steel land will be the site for 600 new homes along with factories and offices, warehouses and workshops.
The Welsh Assembly Government has approved the planning process and the site will be developed by the council along with WAG, developers Pochin Goodman and Defence Estates.

The Ffordd Llanarth Morrisons project came to a grinding halt some three months ago and no one seems to know why,or someone does know and is staying silent(a bit like the site).
It’s strange how Flintshire are really quick to knock places down but rebuild with all the pace of a snail with a broken leg.
Buildings are being knocked down quickly as its the best way to avoid paying business rates. The rules changed a while back to mean even empty buildings were liable.
Will try and find out more about the Llanarth project from various people within the council and report back!
