Being turned off for having traffic at a level that exceeds the server capability is one thing, but being turned off because you exceeded the specification of the package isn’t acceptable.

A good hosting provider should give you advance warning if your usage trend is heading towards exceeding package limits and the last thing they should ever do is switch off a popular site.

It all boils down to having hosting companies with intelligent support staff that understands each customers needs and not dumb control panels that have no flexibility.

One tip I’d suggest for owners who either don’t want to spend money on increasing their bandwidth or simply pay for it when it happens is to prepare for it.

Get your site tagged by an analytical program and then every so often have a look at the stats, buy a good book so you can understand what the figures actually mean.

So when you send out an advertising campaign, you’re going to expect some traffic so look at the stats and see if you can prepare for it. See if you start to notice an increase of traffic in your campaign (they call it a spike) as with each you could be picking up new users.

If you use twitter alot as a form of advertising then you need to know how many users click on your links because one tweet can easily bring down a site.

It amazes me how many companies try to implement “a social media campaign” and not think of a way of gathering results, data they can use to either plow more energy into or call it a day.

You wouldn’t build an iPhone app with no way of atleast gaining some sort of return.

This type of marketing, as you rightly pointed out, takes time.
